Salted Egg Croissant Craze In Singapore - Antoinette Salted Egg Croissant

Though Antoinette wasn’t the first to jump onto the Salted Egg Croissant ($6.50) craze in Singapore but was touted to be the best by many foodie. It is available at all 3 Antoinette outlets but expect long queue. Daily supply is far below demand. As such, either queue early or wait for the craze to taper off.

Croissant was lightly buttery with a crispy outer. In fact, it wasn’t the croissant that was outstanding but the salted egg yolk cream filling. It was smooth, creamy and it has a good amount of salted egg yolk flavour to be savoured.

Sales of this trend food at the Penhas starts at 11am, Sofitel So Hotel at 1pm while Mandarin Gallery to be determined out.

The fame Japanese bakery, Asanoya that swept Singapore in a storm when it opened has also introduced its version of the Salted Egg Croissant ($4.50). We know the standard of its pastries but what about the salted egg yolk cream. It is a sweet version instead of the savoury ones. So it is depending very much on one’s preference.

The salted egg croissant by BreadTalk are in mini form. I thought this is good way to eat it since some may not be able to finish the entire pastry as it may be too cloying for some. The flavour is slanted towards the sweet spectrum. It is sold at $1 each. Currently, there is a promotion of buy 6 get 1 free and buy 10 get 2 free.

Salted Egg Croissant Craze In Singapore - Bridge Salted Egg Croissant

The Salted Egg Croissant ($5.90) is available between 3pm and 5 pm from Tuesday to Friday, 11am to 3pm on Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday.

I have read quite a number of reviews on Instagram saying it was sweet. I was pretty puzzled. I tried and found that the sweetness was from the croissant; buttery with a sweet tint. The salted egg cream filling was smooth, creamy but a little more runny and lightly salted egg yolk flavoured. Personally, I prefer it to be more intense.

Beside the Salted Egg Croissant, Bridge created an innovative flavour, the Truffle Crustard Croissant too.

Salted Egg Croissant Craze In Singapore - Da Paolo Salted Egg Croissant

The sixth to release the Salted Egg Croissant ($6.90) and it is available at all its Da Paolo Gastronomia. I visited the one at Raffles Place.

Personally, I think it didn’t fare as well as its other pastry items. The croissant is generally all right while the salted egg cream filling has lots of room of improvement. It was quite salty and as such masked the flavour of the salted egg. Most importantly the filling was not looking creamy and smooth, the oil didn’t blend well with the rest of the ingredients.

Interestingly, the salted egg yolk filling in Kokomama Salted Egg Croissant ($6.50) seems to have curry leave flavour. I may be wrong. A pity that it was far too salty and the oil was seen floating around the cream. There is lots of room for improvement.

I tried about 2 weeks later after the first trial and with an improved recipe, the version was so much better.

NAHMJ Verdict

The best Salted Egg Croissant is yet to conclude. I used to believe that salted egg goes well with anything, everything. But somehow, personally, I didn’t find that salted egg yolk and croissant combination work in general. I didn’t relish the combination. So if it requires queuing, I won’t waste time queuing for any, unless Mom wants it.

I am sure more will be introduced into the scene. Keep watch.
