After numerous attempts of getting a reservation for a table at Jypsy by PS Cafe at Martin Road, thrilled that my friend finally got a table for 5 on a weekend for lunch. We made the reservation 3 weeks before our lunch date. Jypsy took over Chopsuey which was also a PS group of restaurant; now defunct.
Finally the long anticipated lunch appointment arrived.
Menu at Jypsy suggested Japanese, however with slider on the menu, I felt this item stand out like a sore thumb.
Beginning with some Sashimi from the Chef’s Daily Selection, 12pcs ($31). There are option of 6 and 9 pieces ($19/$26) as an option. It seems these slices were frozen in the freezer for days before they were served. Jypsy is certainly not the restaurant that I will visit for Raw Fish.
PS Cafe is fame for their Truffle Fries so is Jypsy for their Nest of Fries ($11) comprises crispy shredded potato with white truffle oil, wasabi mayo and teriyaki balsamic sauce.
I am sure Gyoza is an irressitible item. 2 option on the menu. Beside, the Unagi & Pork Gyoza ($15), it was Lobster & Crab Gyoza, 6pcs ($15) which we ordered. It wasn’t mind-blowing but considerably tasty with the prawn bisque & dashi sauce.
Robata Broccolini ($9) isn’t the typical green, served with green ponzu and chilli oil to give that savoury citrusy with hint of spiciness.
Among the 9 selection, we opted for the colourful Jypsy Rainbow ($19). As the raw fish slices weren’t as sweet as it could be, neither was the the sushi rice as tasty as it should be, overall was mediocre.
For some reason which you won’t want to know, I didn’t get to savour Spicy Pork Ball ($13).
Smokey Unagi Fried Rice ($22) was rather a disappointment. Smokiness flavour in neither rice nor Unagi. I felt the Cold Tofu was pretty out of place on the plate.
Charred Charsiu Ramen ($17) was equally disappointing. Noodles was firm but it wasn’t as tasty as some ramen and the soup could be more flavour.
NAHMJ Verdict
After our meal, we were confuse of what Jypsy has to offer. Personally, I feel that they lack of an identity. If they are offering Japanese cuisine, I feel that are much better ones which I will turn to instead. And if is fusion, nothing wow us. The plating were gorgeous and certainly instagram-worthy though.
