I first came across Monocle via some website when Monocle started its outpost at Jalan Kelabu Asap, perpedicular to Chip Bee Gardens. A handful of bloggers were excited about Monocle Singapore existence. Somehow, I was under the impression that it was a cafe, but it isn’t. I have a good understanding of who Monocle is after a visit at the Monocle Singapore Shop.
Monocle’s core business is in the publication, started by a Journalist. The first magazine published was termed Monocle which covers from all aspects, from politics to business to travel and so on. It has expanded its publications. One annually, the Forecast, and some travel guides. The first two were London and New York.
When I entered, at a glance, I noticed that Monocle Shop was selling mainly Male merchandises. After a chat with the service crew, Jonathan, aka the ambassador of Monocle or the face of Monocle, he provided me a good reason for my observation. Mainly due to the Monocle readership which is male dominated. But Monocle Singapore is also planning to bring in more Unisex merchandise.
My favourite part of the Monocle Shop is on the not so familiar brands that Monocle are collaborating with and bringing in to the Singapore outlet. As these are only a compliment to its publication business, the merchandise are in very limited quantity.
At a corner of the shop, is a counter with a espresso machine for coffee. With every purchase of its current issue of magazine, it is accompanied with a cup of coffee.
I got hold of the magazine and it was thick. Reading is in progress. I will be doing a review on the magazine when I am done.
