Fairmont Singapore housed a handful of outstanding restaurants and we tried a handful including Prego (one of my turn to Italian Restaurant), Asian Market Cafe (for the buffet) and for the longest time, I finally visited Mikuni Japanese Restaurant located at the third level of the hotel for my belated birthday celebration. Thanks to a friend who gave me a treat there.
My friends commented that the restaurant decoration resembles Chinese restaurant, I beg to differ. Nonetheless the common zen factor of Japanese Restaurant is entirely lacking in this restaurant as well. Perhaps, contemporary is a better description.
Mikuni Japanese Restaurant offers three stations; Teppanyaki, Sushi and Robatayaki with a Master Chef helming them. This is reflected in the menu as well.
Sashimi 寿司 & Sushi 刺身
JOU SASHIMI 上さしみ ($110), a Chef’s Selection of 4 Seasonal Sashimi which include the Sake (Salmon), Toro (Tuna Belly), Tat (Sea Bream) and Shima Aji (Yellow Jack). Among the 4 types of fresh fish slice, my favourite was the Tuna Belly.
We ordered 2 Maki, first was the DRAGON ROLL (8 pcs) ドラゴンロール ($30) and next was the SPIDER (5 pcs) スパイダー ($24). I prefer the former as the flavour was more intense due to the sauce and the combination of ingredients (BBQ Eel, Prawn Tempura, Cucumber, Avocado) contributed to the taste.
Warm Starter 前菜（温）
Followed by the robust aroma imparted by the Sweet Wagyu Miso from the WAGYU DENGAKU 茄子の和牛田楽 ($28). A tasty dish great with Japanese Pearl Rice.
We picked a Teppanyaki dish, the AUSTRALIAN TENDERLOIN (200g) オーストラリアテンダーロイン ($80), though it wasn’t the melt-in-the-mouth kind of beef, it was easy on the jaw. Best enjoyed with the garlic slices.
Before ending the meal with dessert, we completed it with rice. We opted for a CRAB FRIED RICE 蟹 ガーリックフライドライス ($18) and a GARLIC FRIED RICE ガーリックフライドライス ($12). I feel they could have added more garlic to enhance the garlicky fragrant.
I am a big fan of pear dessert hence I might be bias. The SMOOTH PEAR SURINAGASHI WITH FRESH BERRIES RASPBERRIES SORBET SAKE YUZU CONSOMMÉ 洋梨のすり流し、木いちごのシャーベット ($20), an alcoholic dessert, has an heavenly combination of Sake, Yuzu Consomme and Raspberry sorbet with complimenting sweetish pear. Some may find it too sour though.
Complimentary Vanilla Ice Cream for my birthday celebration was pale in comparison.
If you have a budget to splurge, Mikuni Japanese Restaurant will be an excellent choice.
