At each travelling, going on to explore the local food scene is inevitable. And for me, it is always a must to try at least one restaurant listed on the Michelin Guide. My first choice Couvert is not opened for lunch, solely dinner only, which I didn’t realise. Therefore I turned to my second option, Assiette Blanche which is about 7 minutes walk.
With Grote Market nearby, a highly touristy attraction, I was surprised that this restaurant didn’t draw the tourists to them. In any case, Bruge is relatively small, hence it is within walking distance from any corner of Bruge. Modern European design was apparent throughout the space. At 1pm on a Saturday, it was considerably empty with only 4 tables occupied in total (including mine).
Assiette Blanche is a French-Belgain restaurant with house-peeled gray shrimps as their house’s specialty. Good to know that they offer value for money 2-course lunch set at €24. Consisting of a Starter and a Main. This is available daily except Sunday. To make my ordering ease, I have no reason to reject the set lunch deal.
Starting with bread (either brown or white) with butter and olives oil. And I noticed that at Bruge, the local will add lots of salt to the butter and bread.
Followed closely was the Amuse Bouche, a Pastry of Caramelised onions and shaved Parmesan Cheese. Highly palatable, however, many Singaporean will exclaim salty. But I enjoyed.
Paper thin slices of Beef Carpaccio was fresh. It was extra delicious with the Greens and grated Parmesan Cheese.
I was glad that the Cod fillet came with the house specialty, gray shrimp, in addition to cream of bintjes, puffed cauliflower and samphire. Though the Cod was not as oily as I expect, the combination with the cauliflower and shrimp was the surprise elements. I didn’t expect that it was such lovely combo.
A pity I was saving my stomach space for Waffle later hence I didn’t order dessert. At billing timing, the check came in a box. Unbox is and you don’t only get the invoice but also some mint sweet.
Lunch at Assiette Blanche is certainly the place to go to when at Bruge.
