The Japan Rail Café recently held a summer event right in the city centre for office workers to unwind after a long day, in urban Tokyoite style termed Tokyo Summer Park. We were delighted to accept their invitation to join them at the start of the event which was held from 27th to 30th June.

The evening started with a Beer Yoga class for yoga enthusiasts where participants were basically doing yoga moves with a bottle of beer in hand. Interesting for the participants and onlookers alike.
Centre of attraction at the event was of course something more alluring – the Kirin frozen beer. And the difference between it and the typical draught beer? Cold frosty foam layered generously on top of the beer, keeping it chilled for a longer time.
Besides beer, the event also offered a vast selection of juices for the health-conscious. There was Kagome with seasonal Japanese vegetable juices and Oishii Japan with flavoured Amazake (fermented rice drink) to choose from.
The food stands offered Japanese finger food, set meal boxes and even dessert for those who are hungry. I was spoilt for choices and finally settled down with my food after circling the stands a few times.
Hattendo, famous for its cream buns, served up a piping hot dish of fish and chips that had me wondering if I should visit the café again for a decent meal rather than just zipping in for its cream buns all the time. The fish was fresh and broke off in chunks as I sank my fork in and the tartar sauce that accompanied it had a uniquely flavourful taste.
Japan Rail Cafe’s stand offered mini burgers and poutine fries made on the spot. The mini beef burger drenched in tantalizing sauce tasted wonderful as I gulped down mouthfuls of the cold beer.
The night ended for me with Okada Coffee’s ice-cream and there were close to 10 different flavours to choose from. The Goma (sesame) ice-cream which I had chosen in the end does live up to the Goma taste.
As I made my way out of the park that night, DJ Shin was still spinning away great music to a crowd who were starting to lounge on sandbags and hammocks that had replaced the yoga mats earlier on. It had been a good night for a weekday. I am looking forward to more of such events in the urban park!
