I have passed by Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Noodle 大食家大大大虾面 several times, the last was when I went to Crystal Cafe for dinner before I finally set foot into them. Along this stretch of road, hidden away from Orchard Road, there are a handful of other eateries such as Suanthai among others.
If my memory is right, this unit used to be selling chicken rice. I don’t miss chicken rice and in fact am glad to exchange it for Prawn Noodle. Various blog posts mentioned that Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Noodle 大食家大大大虾面 is part of the Big Eater Restaurant group. I tried once, introduced by my brother and was pretty impressed by them. Anyway, that’s not the most important fact.
First thing attracted me as I entered the shop was the strong prawn flavour before the rest, such as the painting on the wall. In fact, it was on my second visit that I noticed the large Eight Immortal Painting.
Menu focused on Prawn Noodle with three sizes of prawn, Big ($5.80), Big Big ($9.80) and Big Big Big ($16.80) with both options of Soup and Dry. The best is the selection of the variety of noodles (Yellow Noodles, Rice Noodle and Bee Hoon) with various combination such as Yellow Noodles with Bee Hoon, Rice Noodle with Yellow Noodle and Bee Hoon with Rice Noodle.
We tried both the soup and dry version. Personally, I prefer the former. The orangish coloured prawn soup, similar to the Penang style, has a rich enough flavour, though comparatively, it is not as robust as the local version. With such an intensity, I thought it is more well balance and not as cloying.
Dry version was pale in comparison as the chilli wasn’t as aromatic as it could have been.
Another item on the menu worth trying is the Wok-Fried Big Prawn White Bee Hoon ($16.80).
The Bee Hoon was braised in prawn stock with onions and parsley to augment to fragrance. Truly, the noodles absorbed the essence. As the Bee Hoon was too thin, it didn’t within heat and moisture well hence, it was a little too soft for my preference.
Lastly, washed it down with Lime Juice or Apple Juice with Sour Plum.
NAHMJ Verdict
I would no doubt return to Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Noodle 大食家大大大虾面 especially for the soup version and wouldn’t mind the wok-fried.
