The Social Space has transformed the space previously occupied by Les Delices to a multi-concept business. More importantly, it offers socially conscious businesses of retail, cafe and nail parlour. In short, it is a social enterprise.
Located at the ground floor of block 333 of Kreta Ayer, it is hidden from the Chinatown tourist attraction. The tranquil vicinity fits the theme and purpose of the business.
Entering the shop, one will be greeted by the retail corner. On the left is the nail parlour, while on the right is the cafe. With rattan chair and lamp cover, giving it a tropical vibes with south-east asian flair.
First the retail space offers ceramic ‘ear mugs’ by The Ketumu Project which offers schizophrenia some form of therapeutic art program. Handmade accessories by refugee.
In addition, bring your owner container to purchase the soap, advocating reduced waste. These are among the many other items that are selling with the purpose of being social responsible.
Over at the cafe, the menu is simple. The Social Space offers both Smoothies and Toast for food and an array of beverages both coffee and tea.
One of the Smoothies that caught my attention was the Berry Berry Good ($10), a blend of Raspberries,Blueberries, Strawberries, Cranberries, Banana and Coconut Milk. I like this light mixture berries blend. The taste was light and it neither overwhelmingly sour nor sweet. It may be better if they could throw in more whole almonds, walnuts or cashew nuts.
Other Smoothies Bowl option offers are Tough Nut ($8), Pink Flamingo ($8) and Matchanana ($10). I keen to try the last one since it is a matcha flavoured smoothies.
Among 5 Open-face Toasts, there are 2 sweet and 3 savoury selection. There is choice of single or double slices. I opted for the single Smoked Salmon + Cream Cheese Toast ($10, $17 for double). I was surprised to find a light cucumber pickle on the toast which provide both as additional texture and refreshing sourish taste. The 2 other savoury options are Avo + Egg ($8 single / $14 double) and Roasted Mushroom + Creme Fraiche ($8 single / $14 double).
For the 2 sweets are Toasted Banana + Peanut Butter ($7 single / $12 double) and Macerated Strawberries + Cream Cheese ($8 single / $14 double).
Lastly was the coffee. I love the low acidity, full body, nutty Cappuccino.
NAHMJ Verdict
Since The Social Space is for a good cause, there is no reason why we should not support them.
