Upper Thomson gathers numerous cafe and a handful are big names such as Pacamara, One Man Coffee, Habitat. Now, Columbus Coffee Co joined the squad in competition. This cafe is by the same folks behind Lunar Coffee Brewers at OUE Downtown Gallery and Atlas Coffee House .
Entrance to the cafe is facing Sin Ming Road. Even though space was relatively huge comparatively to most cafes, it was almost packed when on the day of our visit, a Sunday before 12pm. Luckily, there were a handful of available tables. Safer to make a reservation before arriving at the cafe to avoid disappointment.
Practical minimalist design of the cafe decked with identical wooden black tables and chairs and large light-bulb looking lamp as lights. Order at the counter while food is served to the table.
2-page menu is available with one for food and the other for beverages. 2 section at the food menu with All Day Brunch and Burgers & Pastas available from 11am.
We ordered a Creamy Mushrooms on Toasted Sourdough ($14) from the All Day Brunch Menu. Load of Shimeiji-like mushroom with tomato in cream sauce crowned the thinly sliced sourdough.
Other noteworthy options include the Salmon Soba Noodles ($18) available also at their 2 other cafes. One other popular choice is the Mussels with Lemongrass & Ale Broth ($17), a new item.
The other item is the Classic Cheese Burger & Curlies ($22) from the Pasta & Burger section. Thick moist beef patty with perfect ground size cum coleslaw and caramelised onion sandwiched between the brioche burger bun. A pity the patty was a little too bland.
For desserts, Columbus Coffee Co offers a handful of cakes and tarts and Buttermilk Waffles too. We opted for the Lemon Meringue Tart ($7.50) which is so sour till one will grimace.
This was my first time ordering the Iced Long Black ($5), though it was highly acidicity, it has a full and smooth body with complex dark berry tone which I thought it was perfect for an Iced Black. The Cappuccino ($5 regular / $5.50 large) has a medium acidicity, full and rounded body with nutty and berry flavour. This is by far, one of the better blend that combines the dark and medium roast coffee beans.
Columbus Coffee Co offers 2 pages of menu; one for food and the other for drink.
With the experience of both Atlas and Lunar that are success, we are sure Columbus Coffee Co will be another impressive cafe though we also feel that some of the food there are rooms for improvement. Coffee without doubt continues to be excellent.
