Savour traditional favourites and reinterpretations of well-known dishes from Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia at River Wok, located at 80 Mohamed Sultan Road.
We are so glad that finally a restaurant that offers Thai food is back to the area after Soi 60 Thai Restaurant at the Quayside was closed.
Appetisers and Soups
Yam Tuapoo Goong Sod (S$ 16), consisting of wing beans, tiger prawns and shredded chicken mixed with a lovely tangy and spicy dressing made with fish sauce, lime juice, coconut cream, chili paste and topped with crispy fried shallots and roasted grated coconut. The sauce is aromatic and savoury, with that hit of spice at the end, make this memorable.
Follow up with Nam Khao Hor (S$ 10 – veg/ S$ 14), a Vietnamese hand rolled rice paper with minced chicken and roasted rice crumbles. The lemon-marinated minced chicken with crispy rice crumbles will keep you reaching out for more after every bite. It is such as simple dish but bought me so much pleasure.
Chef Chookiat’s favourite cuisine is Vietnamese. It definitely reflects his belief in serving “nutraceutical” dishes, that rely mainly on fresh, simple ingredients and healthy-boosting herbs and spices to enhance flavour. Pho Bo (S$ 26) is served the traditional way in a fragrant beef broth but with the added richness of premium sliced Wagyu beef accompanied with the freshness of bean sprouts and other herbs. The broth is lighter, more subtle and so yummy. The meat is juicy and smells heavenly.
Curries and Mains
Gaeng Phed Ped Yang (S$ 22), a roasted duck in rich Thai red curry. Chef Chookiat adds a creative twist to this traditional dish with grapes and pineapple giving a wonderful hint of sweetness with spice.
Post Meal Sweet Tooth Indulgence
A meal is never complete without desserts! Choose from crowd favourites Banh Chuoi (S$ 12), a savoury Vietnamese dessert consisting of banana fritters and black sesame ice cream or the traditional Thai Khao Neow Ma Muang (S$ 10), a sweet sticky rice pudding paired with slices of sweet mango and coconut cream.
NAHMJ Verdict
Nestled among restaurants and the romantic riverside of Robertson Quay, River Wok serves modern Indochina cuisine, pulling together dishes from Laos, Indonesia, Vietnam and Thailand. River Wok is a great place to hangout after work to enjoy the Southeast Asian food.
