Recently, there are more and more China big brand venturing onto our shore, Singapore. The last one which we visited was Spice World Hot Pot Clark Quay, after Haidilao. Now, we are greeted by The Hungry Caveman 某个时间烤串 perched at level 7 of Orchard Central. Many Korean BBQ scattered throughout Singapore, and we love our grilled meat. Now with the Chinese BBQ skewers entering the Singapore F&B scene pitting against the many other BBQ, I wonder which would Singapore lean toward.
The Hungry Caveman has over hundred of outlets spread through China and that includes Shanghai. As such, I again queried with my Shanghainese friends about them. Though they have not tried, they checked up dianping.com (equvialent to our burrple.com) and noted that they have extremely positive rating (above 4 out of 5).
Let’s start with the interior. Looks like they are trying to depict the space like a cave since it was dark with caveman painting look alike on the wall.
The attractive selling point at The Hungry Caveman BBQ system is that, diners need not rotate the skewers as this is done automatically by the machine. Similar to Kko Chi Bar. Provided you place the skewers correctly onto the device.
The must order at The Hungry Caveman is Signature Lamb Skewer ($2.20/skewer). Next is the AUS Grain Fed Beef Skewer ($2.60/skewer). Personally, I love the former. With sufficient dry rub chilli on the surface of the meat to mask the gamey taste, though I am sure if you are sensitive to the taste, you will savour the unpleasantness.
Other skewers option include chicken (mid wings, skin, gizzard, chicken feet). For mid wings, you can choose the various marination. In addition, there are pork choices, prawn, assortment of mushrooms and vegetables. In general, I love the meat more than the vegetables. As the latter taste strangely syrupy sweet.
Packets of condiments are offered to enhance the flavour of the skewers.
Mushrooms
If you are in need for food without grilling by the machine, order the sweetish and lightly spicy Grilled Golden Mushroom ($6.80/dish).
Vegetable
The Yummy Garlic Eggplant ($5.80) is a recommended item. Highly aromatic due to the garlic.
Wheat
If you like toasted bread with butter and sugar, you may like the Caveman Bread ($2) for some carbohydrates.
Mains & Cooked Dish
Numerous noteworthy cooked dishes such as Century Egg With Marinated Ginger ($5.95) and Fried Pork Dumpling With Cabbage ($9.50/12pcs) as sides.
For mains, diners could opt for Golden Egg Fried Rice ($7.80) and Special Fried Noodles ($8.80). I prefer the latter.
Seafood
Stir Fried Clams with Spring Onion ($11.80), Grilled Giant Cuttlefish ($12.80) are some of the delish cooked seafood, though the former is a little too oily.
Premium Scallop with Garlic Vermicelli ($4.80/pcs)
Dessert
A handful of dessert items are found at The Hungry Caveman too, Grilled Banana ($2) is one popular dish. More intense flavour due to the caramelised sugar in the banana.
Alternatively, diners could opt of Grilled Pineapple skewer ($2/pc) and Grilled Marshmallow ($2/skewer).
