Booking hotels at Rotterdam is challenging as it is fully booked fast. Furthermore, our visit coincide with 2018 International Film Festival Rotterdam (24 January to 4 February). Finally, I settled for Hotel van Walsum Rotterdam during the weekend of 26 and 27 January 2018.
Hotel van Walsum Rotterdam is a three-star hotel.
I booked a single room via getaroom that provided the cheapest room rate at US$150.65 per night (exlcude city tax) that I can find for 27 to 28 January. Hotel in Netherlands charge a city tax of 4.5% of the room rate. My original plan was a solo visit to Rotterdam. However, my cousin decided to join me. I inquired about getting a double room upon arrival at the hotel but the hotel was fully booked due to 2018 International Film Festival Rotterdam. I noticed that almost at every weekends, there’s some sort of major event in Rotterdam.
Location & Surrounding
Located within the city centre on Mathenesser Lane. Even though it is in the city, however, the hotel is surrounded with serenity. Easily accessible to the hotel via the tram and subway since the stop and station are a stone-throw away.
Restaurants, supermarkets and shops are 5-minute walk away and attractions such as Euromast, Cube House, Markthal are within walking distance since Rotterdam isn’t huge in the first place.
Check-in & Out
Staff at the counter assisting with checking in and out of the hotel spoke English. The gentleman who helped us with the check-in is approachable while the lady who did our check-out was unfriendly.
Check in to the hotel is from 1pm
The single room at Hotel van Walsum Rotterdam was bigger than expected. I like the design though it is quite squeezy for 2 guests, it is sufficient for 1. Pastel yellow on one wall with white for the remaining walls making the room will warm and cosy.
In addition, there is a small working desk and flat screen TV. About 4 electric sockets with Europe 2-pin are plus available.
In the room, what the hotel offers is a comfy single bed though I find the mattress too soft, it doesn’t give good support for the back. Pillow likewise is soft and this doesn’t give good neck support.
Complimentary Tea and Coffee facilities are available too.
I was glad that there is a heater in bathroom. So right after shower, I don’t feel the cold immediately.
The showering area was tiny comparatively to the entire bathroom. There is no bathtub here though. Height of the shower handle is adjustable and could be removed too. Only fundamental toiletries are provided; a bottle of all-in-one shampoo and bath gel and the other was a hand-wash cum a small bar of soap. Hair-dryer is also available.
Housekeeping standard is relatively high, rooms and bathrooms are spick and spank with no sign of dusts and hairs.
There is a cafe at the ground floor offering some food.
My room rate include breakfast for one. Additional breakfast for guest is at about EUR 17. I love the breakfast spread. One of the best breakfast in Europe since most offer the continental breakfast with only breads and juices. At Hotel van Walsum Rotterdam, there are cold cuts, numerous jams, cereals, pastries, cakes, cheeses as well.
No swimming pool, gym or sauna. Except carpark.
The hotels also offers luggage storage, fax/photocopying, express checkin/checkout, safe deposit box, bicycle rent, dry cleaning, ironing service, laundry, shoe shine, ticket service and a tour desk.
I was glad that I could get Hotel van Walsum Rotterdam at a reasonable price. Though it is a little far from the train station, however, we like the quiet neighbourhood vibes. A street-away there are restaurants and supermarket too. Furthermore, it is near a subway station. Though not as perfect as Pullman London St Pancras, I appreciate the clean room, ambience and sumptuous hotel breakfast.
