Humble-looking Nanbantei Japanese Restaurant perched at the same site at Far East Plaza for a very long time. I knew about its existence for as long as I know about Far East Plaza. I have heard a lot of positive reviews and feedback from friends and blogs alike. However, somehow, with so many restaurants choices in Singapore, it never dawned upon me to give this well-established brand a chance.
Till this time, a friend gave me a belated-birthday treat at Nanbantei Japanese Restaurant.
Upon entering, I notice a homongenous colour throughout the restaurant. Everything piece of furniture and fixture were the same monotonous brown tone. A huge counter was the key as behind this counter seats is where the grilling are in action. The remaining space were occupied by normal dinning tables. In addition, I noticed that at each seat, the same setting of utensils and seasoning were meticulously placed.
At Nanbantei Japanese Restaurant, Yakitori is their specialty. Similar to Hibiki Japanese Restaurant who offer this item as their signature too. There were a total of 3 set of course menu. First was the Yakitori Course ($39), Sashimi & Yakitori Course ($39) which we opted and lastly the Veggie Course ($32).
In every set course meal Miso Soup, Rice and Pickle were included.
Sashimi were fresh and there were 3 types of fish on the platter.
8 sticks of Yakitori grill with either salted & pepper or Terriyaki sauce. We prefer the former.
Among the 8 sticks, the Pork and Leek stick was amazing and we felt it was the best.
For the Terriyaki sauce, I like the Chicken Balls stick.
We ordered an ala carte, Chicken Gizzard however we didn’t enjoy as it was far too tough and chewy.
Red Bean Paste with Mochi Ball was the dessert in the set course. Lightly sweetened soft red bean with chewy mochi though simple was a great way to end the meal.
When I returned to Nanbantei Japanese Restaurant, I will surely order the Pork and Leek Yakitori stick and Chicken Ball and I am keen to try others items too.
