SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club is two years old. I have visited the Cafe located at Hougang Avenue 9 previously, that was when they first started and rated them favourably. Time flies, it was 2 years ago. This round at my revisit, I noticed a change of food menu and they retained their signature drinks.
For those who aren’t familiar with SOD Cafe, they started out selling bubble tea and have ever since expanded to the cafe business. Hence their tea are popular and I attest to that.
I didn’t observe any major change in the cafe. The cafe seems exactly the same like 2 years ago. The change is in the menu. It has expanded with most of the original items replaced by new items. Now the menu is more exciting with more selection from various category. One other bonus is that SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club offers healthier choice items too. Another attractive point is that all Mains, except for the beef dishes are under $15.
A total of about 15 Starters and Soups are available. Beginning our meal with the Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup ($5.50). Lightly creamy with tons of mushroom bites making the creamy tasty and yet not too cloying.
We love the Truffle Fries ($6.50). Fries were crispy with truffle scents good for both the nose and palate.
Glazed Chicken Wings ($7.50) are deep-fried mid-wings with generous honey glace hence some find it too sweet. However, I love it since I always love honey on my wings.
Followed by the Tomato Bruschetta ($4.50) also in the soups & starters section. It get quite messy when eating the bruschetta as the tomato-diced fall all over. The flavour was dominated by the olive oil flavour.
Before moving on to the next section of the menu, we have the Chilli Crab Mini Pizza ($8.50). This mini pizza tasted better than its look hence we were glad. If you are keen on the healthier choice, opt for the Mushroom on Toast ($4.50) or Chef Salad ($8.50).
Five All Day Breakfast items were on SOD Cafe Menu. Egg Benedict ($12.50) was the typical with no surprise, nevertheless, it was tasty with abundant hollandaise sauce which I enjoyed. Furthermore, it came with brioche.
The Big SOD Cafe Breakfast ($12.50) was another All Day Breakfast which we ordered. It has all our favourite ingredients within the platter. And I thought they did the scramble egg well.
On SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club Menu was 16 Mains. We tried slightly more than a thrid of them.
First was the SOD Cafe’s Special Beef Burger ($13.50). Hefty beef patty with melting cheese and a sunny side-up sandwich between a fluffy sesame bun has potato wedges by the sides. Overall, it was enjoyable.
Pan Seared Pinky Snapper ($13.50) is a healthier choice. This pan seared snapper was rather bland for me and since it was seasoned with tomato fondue, a sauce which I don’t fancy, I avoided eating it with the sauce.
The essence of the Chicken Supreme ($9.50) was from both the cheese and tomato sauce.
Chicken Kiev ($9.50) reminds me of the Cordon Bleu since the chicken breast was rolled with abundant herb and then was baked to perfect chicken. The main flavour was similiar to the olive oil aroma.
Spaghetti Aglio Olio with Prawns ($13.50) was light spicy on the al dente pasta.
Smoked Duck Spaghetti ($9.50) was filled with the flavour from the smoked duck.
Homemade Waffle a la mode ($6.50) with an additional single scoop of ice cream ($3.90) was our first dessert. The charcoal waffle was fluffy with light crispy outer was lacking in buttermilk scent. Luckily, there was ice cream to compensate this missing element.
Next are 2 tarts. Both equally good. Each has a group of fans though it was a marginal victory for the Matcha Tart. Personally, I love the Lemon Pomelo Tart better. As I felt the matcha was a little overshadowed by the oreo cookies crust tart base. While the Lemon Pomelo has a good balance of all elements.
Lastly, was the Galaxy Cake.
Encased with a galaxy colours gelatin was a chocolate mouse with citrus centre. I highly recommend this cake.
SOD Milk Tea ($4.50) is one of popular drink in SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club. It contains Rooibos Tea which is technically a herb hence contains no caffeine. Since the milk tea was lightly sweetish, I drank it without adding fructose. If you like toppings, choose from black or white pearls or aloe vera.
Finally was the Summer Fruit SOD Tea ($6.50).
After 2 years, SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club ventured into customized cake. If you have any celebration and would love this cute unicorn cake, code “NAHMJ” for 20% discount.
I was glad that I found SOD Cafe @ Ci Yuan Community Club retained their standard at this revisit.
