Gone are the days when a healthy and low calorie meal means having a plate of boring greens with thousand island dressing. Plenty of salad bars, rice bowl specialty shops and poke bowl spots have sprung up all over our sunny island, leaving us spoilt for choice. One of which is Green Croft.
In this competitive climate, Green Croft courts us with unpretentious salad meals at wallet-friendly prices, effectively “keeping our figures slim but our wallets fat”! Sounds good? Then check them out!
Keeping Your Wallets Fat
To keep your wallets fat, Green Croft is priced very attractively. Prices start from S$7.50 Nett for a Normal Size Meal (Romaine + 1 Carbo + 5 Toppings) to S$14.50 Nett for a Supreme Size Meal (Romaine + 1 Carbo + 3 Proteins + 4 Toppings). Like other salad shops, certain ingredients like beef, salmon and avocado are subjected to additional charge.
For those of you who have been to The Lawn nearby, the ordering system at Green Croft is similar.
1. Take a pencil and order chit.
2. Choose the proteins, carbo, toppings and dressing that you want.
3. Queue, pay and collect the food by yourself.
In exchange, you don’t have to pay for service charge. Green Croft also do not charge GST.
Keeping Your Figure Slim
To keep your figure slim, Green Croft promises to use only fresh vegetables (bought and cut daily) and healthful ingredients; smoked meats are seasoned with less salt while other meats are cooked with the sous-vide method to retain the moisture and nutrients of each protein. Because of this, people who are used to stronger flavours may find Green Croft’s offerings to be a little bland unless they heap on the dressings. However, the health conscious and calorie watching group should be very pleased with the salad meals here.
While I am not that health conscious nor actively counting my calories, I did enjoy having their tender smoked duck/salmon with crunchy vegetables and flavorful toppings like mangoes, mandarin oranges and cherry tomatoes.
But if you are not keen on smoked meats, I personally think that Green Croft’s tandoori chicken is pretty good too.
For a fuller meal, you can consider adding on their cold brown soba, brown rice or cous-cous at less than 120 calories each. In short, the bowl is in your hands! Just choose what you enjoy!
Apart from Salad and Rice Bowls, Green Croft also serves some hot noodle items, which we did not try. If you check them out, let us know what you think of them!
A Little Surprise
For those with a sweet tooth, Green Croft offers two desserts. As you have probably guessed, yogurt is one of them. But to my surprise, the other dessert on their menu is actually Creme Brulee (S$3.50 Nett)! Wait! Isn’t that full of cream and sugar hence a misfit for a salad place?
We expressed our concerns and were assured that their creme brulee are made with lesser cream and sugar so that each portion only contains 300 calories. Share that with a friend and you get to enjoy a delicious dessert at less than 200 calories. What a bargain right? Taste wise, the creme brulee is still creamy, has a decent sugar crackling and is not too sweet. I wouldn’t rave about it but it should be good enough to satisfy an urgent creme brulee craving.
I will recommend Green Croft to those who are really into healthy and balanced meal. But if you just want to squeeze some greens into a full flavored meal of meats, this is not for you.
