Mapletree Business City is constantly chaning ever since it first operated a number of years ago. After some re-vamped last year, more F&B outlets were added. One of them that took the plunge was Kaisen Ichi.
I was pretty excited to give them a try. Dated a friend to go for lunch since we were considerably near the outlet.
The outlet was relatively small with the maximum number of seats they could probably include. There isn’t much service to speak since from order to collection of food were self-service.
Menu at Kaisen Ichi is limited to Don, Udon and Chazuke. We tried at least one item each from the 3 categories.
First was the Salmon Ikura Chazuke ($12+). I am not a salmon fan as such didn’t find it satisfying. Anway, neither did my friend.
I am a big fan of Chirashi Don as such I didn’t want to miss the Kaisen Bara Chirashi Don ($12+). It was disappointing. Some of the sashimi weren’t fresh. The pungent unpleasant fishy scent existed.
We attempted the Beef Steak Don ($16+). Nothing fantastic as the beef was tough. Nothing flavourful. The consolation was the runny egg.
Lastly the Buta Iku Udon ($12), as disappointing as the first. The soup was bland so was the pork. However, Udon was decent.
NAHMJ Verdict
We visited Kaisen Ichi twice but both times were disappointing. Somehow each and every item seems to be lacking of some key seasoning. It just doesn’t taste any where close to those in the authentic Japanese Restaurant.
