Folks behind A Poke Theory has ventured into another concept with Alter Ego Cafe located at Esplanade. Though the Poke Bowl is also available if that’s what you might be wondering. This outlet isn’t about healthy offerings. Instead it offers the altered half of the personality, the rich unhealthy delish snack great for beer.
It is a chillax place. Great for gathering over a few bottles of beer and food. Nothing fancy, perhaps the exception are the mural art wall.
On the menu, there are 2 sections in every category; Eat Clean and Indulge Dirty. Diners have the option to choose the healthy option or otherwise.
Since Alter Ego is very much a chillax place, beer is never lacking. Over 2 dozens of choices with selections of Ales, Lager, Wheat, Cider, Beers and Draft beers are available.
If you don’t drink, no worry, Tea Jugs ($7), Craft Sodas ($7), Rebel Coconut Mylk ($5), Cold Pressed Juice ($5) and Cold Brew Coffee ($7) are also available.
At Alter Ego, instead of DIY your own bowl, they offer Pre-set Poke Bowl with 4 selections. Among them is a vegan option, Green Goddess ($13). We tried also the Dynamite Kickin’ ($15). Surprisingly, we love the former. The combination of pomegranate and pineapple is well paired.
Numerous suitable beer snacks are also available on Alter Ego menu. Some of the popular selection are Fried Chicken Skin ($8) and Caramelized Ikan Bilis ($10) though neither are my preferred option.
More option, equally good and sinful are the Loaded Taters ($13) and Pizza Fries ($14).
At all drinking establishment, chicken wings is never missing, hence diners will find the Buffalo Wings ($14) on the menu too.
Pulled Pork Dip ($11) is one other fabulous option to fill the stomach. Interestingly, it was the Pita Bread by the side that captured more attention.
Don’t miss out on the Grilled Cheese ($11). Add braised beef short rib filling ($3). It is seriously too addictive to be missed. Alternatively, choose the Chilli Cheese Dog ($14).
No dessert is a complete meal. As such we got the Berries & Cream ($11) to share. The chantilly cream sat on a bed of macerated strawberries and raspberries. This is not my kind of dessert was I don’t like cream.
Other dessert options are the Lemon Icebox Pie ($11), I think I will like better. Or the healthier option, Blackberry Binge Smoothie Bowl ($6) and Caccoholic Smoothie Bowl ($6)
NAHMJ Verdict
Food served at Alter Ego are generally rich and flavourful. It is certainly not for the light palate.
