Kumoya means fluffy light cloud, is the re-born of Karafuru since their closure due to management changes. Both are where beautiful Japanese-inspired French desserts were curated.
There isn’t any changes to the design to the unit. Everything looks exactly like Karafuru days. Maybe the colour dessert pictures hung were addition. It helps to cheer-up the place to otherwise boring white.
At a glance, the menu offering looks similar, however at a closer examination, there are additional items and slight changes were made. I was informed by the owner that they have improved the recipe of the previous items to make it better.
Pancakes are newly introduced. They don’t exist in the days of Karafuru. Both savoury and sweet pancakes are on the menu. For savoury, there are Tempura Soft Shell Crab ($17.90), Karaage Chicken ($16.90), Breakfast ($18.90) and the classic Butter And Maple ($8.90). I tried only the soft shell crab. It is uplifting to spot the grilled pineapple on the plate. Overall was pleasant. But I didn’t like the idea of having my pancake without at least the maple syrup.
Sweet Pancakes are available with flavours of Matcha ($14.90), Chocolate Banana ($14.90) and Tiramisu ($15.90). I went for the Matcha. I didn’t find the froyo complementing the pancake well though I like the matcha flavour which was strong enough.
Overall, the pancakes has a tinge of brininess which I find it weird with the sweet ingredients.
If pancake is not your kind of food, opt for the original Yoghurt Parfaits that were created when Karafuru started. The four flavours remains as Matcha ($15.90), Yuzu ($15.90), Sakura ($14.90) and Hazelnut Chocolate ($14.90)
Eclairs are now smaller and slightly cheaper. Individually at $3. For more economic of scale, get them in 3 pieces at $8.50, 6 at $16.50. And at even more value for money, get 12 at $31.50. $0.50 additional charge for takeaway box.
9 flavours are available at Kumoya while I tried only a third of them; Yuzu, Matcha and Pistachio with Matcha as my favourite. In general, comparatively, the choux pastry is drier and rough in texture. Though the flavours were more intense (which I prefer) than those offered by Karafuru, with the same token they are much sweeter which I don’t prefer. All the alcoholic flavours were removed from the menu as they are going Halal (in progress).
NAHMJ Verdict
In a nutshell, I do find changes to the overall menu and taste at Kumoya with some positive changes hitting the right note. However there are misses which require to be fixed.
