After the success of their first outlet at The Central, 8 Korean BBQ ventured on for its second. This round they chose a location as convenient as their first, Shaw Centre in Orchard vicinity.
Being a full-service Korean BBQ restaurant, service crews are present to grill the meat for diners at 8 Korean BBQ At Shaw Centre. Hence diners could sit back, relax, chit chat and enjoy the meat over some Makgeolli.
To celebrate the opening of their second oultet, they introduce the Big Hog Plate ($45) specially for the 8 Korean BBQ at Shaw Centre only. Instead of the usual thinly sliced pork, the chunky 360g slab Hungarian Mangalitsa Pork Belly was grilled and cubed into manageable bite size. As such, diners could savour the crispy outer with meaty inside. Though it may take a little more time in grilling the meat, the most critical factor is that the meat will retain the natural succulent juice.
Currently, the latest trend in Korea is to grill from a huge slab of pork.
When I saw the Eight’s Special Steamed Egg ($12) served, I was thrilled though I find it weird to have eggs during bbq. Nonetheless, I support the idea as I love my eggs!! The soft creamy scrambled egg-like texure was tasty.
For Pork lovers, another Signature Mangalitsa specialty is the 8 Colours Set ($98). There are 8 strips of thick-cut Hungairan pork belly each is around 80g to 100g, marinated in 8 flavours. From the lightest to the heaviest flavour, namely, Wine, Original, Garlic, Herb, Curry, Miso, Red Pepper and Kalbi.
With every 8 Colours Set ordered, diners could top up an additional $6 for either the Seafood Soft Tofu or Army Stew. We opted for the Army Stew. Most diners of the night felt that it was spicy, but personally, I find it acceptable. I felt that the flavours could be more intense for an improved tasting experience.
Bingsu is hardly missing from the menu of a Korean restaurant. Likewise, 8 Korean BBQ at Shaw Centre is also serving this dessert. We went for the Bibimbap Bingsu ($28). Huge enough to serve as much as 6. Uniquely at 8 Korean BBQ, the condensed milk were infused into the shaved ice.
Never missed out on Makgeolli when in Korean restaurant. I don’t usually drink alcohol as I don’t enjoy, however whenever it comes to Makgeolli I got to exercise self-constraint. Lol! We went for the Organic Honey Makgeolli ($35). The restaurant added organic honey into the makgeolli as such remember to mix well before serving. Some diners find it too sweet but I thought it was at my preferred sweetness. So maybe it would be wise to serve with separate honey and makgeolli then diners could mix according to their desire.
Lunch Only
Chul Pan – Beef ($18 per portion) is only available for lunch. This dish which is highly suitable for lunch as it could be cooked within a short time frame. It is served with either rice by the side or mixed into the dish while cooking. Or to have the best of both world, asked for half each.
Personally, I didn’t enjoy this dish as I find it too sweet for a main.
NAHMJ Verdict
8 Korean BBQ At Shaw Centre is certainly a pork heaven (previously, we featured a beef heaven).
