Toko You Restaurant duped as the legendary restaurant at Bandung. Mainly due to its long establishment since 1947. Wow! Indeed it came a long way and it is still so popular today. Little wonder why they are the talk of the town at Bandung. So do visit them when you are there. Don’t missed out on this gem! Meanwhile, read on to find out what to order.
It is easy to miss Toko You as the entrance is a distance from the road. Furthermore, it has a narrow passage door with no signage of “Toko You”.
We visited the restaurant in the night for dinner. As the restaurant is dimly lit, the ambience is equivalent to candle-light dinner. Almost all the tables were outdoor, so expect cigarette smoke throughout the meal.
On each table various sauces were provided. We didn’t try any though.
Tahu Gejrot (IDR 20K) is the first must order dish. Personally, I find it similar to our version of Tau Pau, except that it is firmer in texture. It has a dark sweet and spicy sauce. Pretty appetising.
Toko You is famous for their noodle, Yamien. Almost every blog post on Toko You has this dish as highlight. Therefore, it is a must order when you are at this restaurant. If you don’t, you miss out on the gem. They have made the noodle at perfection. With the dark sweet sauce at the base together with the shallot and parsely, these enhance the flavour. We have the noodle with Beef Balls (Baso Sapi).
The third must order dish is Nasi Rawon (IDR 60K). It consists of well done grilled beef, crunchy beansprout and half a salted egg. It is the sauce that heightened the dinning experience. The sauce is cooked with various spices hence it was extremely fragrant.
The only less perfection in this dish was the tough grilled beef.
We ordered a vegetable, Udang ca Kailan (IDR 65K). I was disappointed at the tiny shrimp in the dish as I was expecting medium size ones.
At Toko You, a cup of free tea is served to all diners. If you prefer, you could have the decent cup of tea only.
NAHMJ Verdict
Based on the 3 dishes we order, it seems that the food at Toko You is mainly sweet which some may not prefer. We have no complained about the sweet mains and we did enjoy the food. Furthermore, we would certainly want to return especially for the noodle. The undesired factor was for the dark dinning environment in the night and having to inhale cigarette smoke through the dinning.
And the menu are all in Bahasa Indonesia, so if you don’t read a single word of Bahasa, it is difficult to order.
