The Betterfield At The Treasury, Bigger, Better – Clarke Quay, Singapore

For those who love the food whipped by the talented Chef Shaun, owner cum chef of The Betterfield, but didn’t like the squeeze, not well ventilated cafe at Waterloo Street, rejoice! As The Betterfield moved to a much larger space occupying the former Petals Restaurant by Shatec at The Treasury Building. Coincidentally, Chef Shaun trained at the Shatec and has his internship at the Petals. Returning to such a memorable location, I am sure Chef Shaun would be reminiscing about his good old days there previously.

The interior of The Betterfield isn’t classy. In fact, some may pass the cafe off as it looks very much like a canteen. And if that happened, you are missing a gem. Despite the unattractive interior or even some may lament not impressive at all but don’t let that get you down. Beyond the look of the space is the delish food whipped from Chef Shaun’s kitchen. Try it to believe it.

At the new location, The Betterfield will serve some new items on the menu. And of course, you will still get some of the All Time favourite Betterfield dishes.

We started our meal with dishes from The Entree. These items are available from 11am to 3pm and 6pm to 10pm daily which is the operating hours of The Betterfield at The Treasury.

The Betterfield At The Treasury, High Street, Singapore - Red Cheddar Scallops Tots ($16)

First Entree dish we started was the Red Cheddar Scallops Tots ($16). Melted mozzarella covered the Japanese Scallops and accompanied by cheddar tots. Lastly, scattered chopped parsley over the dish before serving. As I like both cheese and scallops, this is a great dish for me.

The Betterfield At The Treasury, High Street, Singapore - Hot Melted Brie ($16)

Next is a dish to die-for, especially if you enjoy cheese and in particular Brie. I am one!! Presenting The Betterfield’s Hot Melted Brie ($16). Deep-fried the Breaded Brie to achieve the perfect golden brown look. And these are sat on a charcoal bun. On the plate are berry compote, grana padano and parsley. As one cut the breaded brie apart (while it is hot), the brie flows. Thumbs up and Thumbs up!!

Cheese Curry Fries ($12) was the last Entree we have for the night, but more delish food to come in the Mains. The fries likewise is fried to perfection and is mixed with The Betterfield secret curry spice and shredded cheese. It is served with Japanese curry mayo on the plate. The fries are a little sweetish which was the key to lift the taste profile of the dish.

The alternate options for fries is The Ultimate Italian Black Truffle Fries ($10) or the Roasted Duck Fat Potatoes ($16).

Calling fans of the Pop Mentaiko Chicken ($16). In case you are worried that Chef Shaun might take this off the menu, fret not. It is still on the menu. * Relief *

The remaining dish for selection at The Entree are Eight-spiced Coriander Thai Chilli Chicken ($13) and Saute Mushroom and Spinach ($8)

At The Betterfield, 6 Spaghetti dishes are offered. Its spaghetti are monte with butter to finish as such it is richer in taste and flavour. We tried few of Chef Shaun’s pride.

The Betterfield At The Treasury, High Street, Singapore - Mentaiko Superior Japanese Scallops Spaghetti ($25)

Mentaiko Superior Japanese Scallops Spaghetti ($25) is one of my favourite among the pasta dish because I like Mentaiko sauce.

The second spaghetti dish we tried was the Creme de Canard Spaghetti ($20). A very garlicky pasta. A pity the duck flavour was not prominent.

Salted Egg fan could opt for The Classic Salted Egg Spaghetti ($21).

For spaghetti with prawns, 2 options, Tiger Prawn Aglio Olio ($18) and Japanese Furikaked Prawn ($21). Lastly is the Champignon Black Truffled Cream Spaghetti ($18).

Coming to the Mains, likewise there are 6 dishes. Something rare on the cafe menu, that is usually seen only in restaurants, and normally the Japanese restaurant is the Omakase. And The Betterfield has decided to add it on to the menu. This dish will be changed from time to time. At the start, till 31 May 2016, The Betterfield introduced the Cote de Boeuf ($11 per 100g) to diners. A minimum order for this dish is required, do check with the crew. For regulars who have been patronising The Betterfield would highly rave about the Beef dishes because they are Chef Shaun’s specialty. It is highly must try.

The prime steak was grilled. Before serving, it is sliced and torch-flamed to bring out the aroma and give a touch of char.

I enjoyed having the beef with the lava salt (the black particle on the plate). And I would certainly order a plate of fries to pair it with the beef.

Other premium beef selection available are the Wagyu Beef Mbs 4 and The Black Angus Ribeye which are permanently on the menu.

The Betterfield At The Treasury, High Street, Singapore - Mushroom Truffle Risotto ($22)

For non-beef diners, there are other options available. One of the highly recommended Main is the Mushroom Truffle Risotto ($22).

The Betterfield At The Treasury, High Street, Singapore - Scallop Risotto ($22)

If one prefer seafood, opt for either the Prawn Risotto or Scallop Risotto (both are $22). The other 2 are Pulled Duck Burger ($21) and French Duck Confit ($22).

Eggs dishes and salads are both available on The Betterfield menu.

NAHMJ Verdict

The Betterfield may be an unassuming cafe but is led by a talented chef, Chef Shaun, whipping delish dishes to diners. And certainly don’t miss their beef dishes if you enjoyed beef.
