After weeks of opening, The Plain Jane Cafe has been the talk of the town. Many might already have been aware that it was opened by Rich & Good Cake Shop, fame for its tiny Swiss Roll in dozen of flavours.
When I arrived at The Plain Jane Cafe at about 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon, I saw the display counter empty and my heart sank. After enquiry, I understand they have a handful in the kitchen. What a relief!!
Neither the interior of the cafe, nor its cake were a Plain Jane. The cafe was dressed in a vintage ambience. You could identify lots of element. One big factor was the tile floor, others contributed by the ornaments.
The menu is definitely not The Plain Jane either. Beside the Swiss Roll and some other slice cakes and pastries, light meals such as Cold Udon Salad, Japanese Curry with Onigiri and Quesadilla with Spicy Mayo were offered. Others include seasonal brunch.
The Swiss Roll offered by The Plain Jane Cafe differ from Rich & Good. Its Swiss Roll were large withe thin spong and lots of cream. It is the cream that provides the flavour of the roll. If cream is what you love, this is made specially for you. The Plain Jane Cafe whipped numerous flavours of Swiss Roll; Original (Vanilla), Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Matcha, Earl Grey, Thai Milk Tea, Raspberry and Yuzu.
We tried a handful of the flavours, Raspberry, Matcha, Earl Grey, Thai Milk and Chocolate. All were equally good. We can’t decide which we prefer better; Raspberry, Matcha or Earl Grey. All were lightly sweetened. Chocolate was the heaviest in terms of taste and flavour; and was the sweetest too.
At The Plain Jane Cafe, they uses the Handlebar Espresso by the Gentlemen’s Coffee Company. It is a medium roast with medium acidity, full body with mainly caramel and dark chocolate flavour note cum medium winey and smokey hint. It was quite a balanced cuppa.
The Plain Jane Cafe uses Ette Tea. A number of tea variety were offered.
NAHMJ Verdict
The Swiss Roll baked by The Plain Jane Cafe is lightly sweetened, in general. Though this may not be true for the Chocolate flavoured one. There were also free Wifi but it was a little too slow.
A great addition to the neighbourhood.
