Free The Robot Cafe co-existed with Bitters & Love at Unit 118 on Telok Ayer Road. The former in the day, while the latter in the night. A pretty common operating mechanism for a number of cafe cum bar these days.
In the day, Free The Robot will only occupy the front space of the unit hence seating is limited. For those who is familar with Bitters & Love, you wouldn’t need the description of the space.
When one passed by unit 118 along Telok Ayer Street, one might thought it is under renovation with the wooden plank covering up the space.
The door here is also one that is used and rather vintage kind. If you have ever seen the doors of an old HDB flat in the 70s or even 80s, you know what I mean. If not, the one at Free The Robot is a good example. There is a peek hole to have a glance into the space. You can do that which I did.
I like the wall drawing. It is a scene of Telok Ayer with Robots roaming around together the humans. The space consists mainly of normal wooden dinning tables and chairs on one side. And on the other, with the only cushy sofa.
Menu at the Free The Robot was rather simple with Sandwiches, Salads, Mains and Sides with three or four items each. And a list of drinks. After I ordered, I spotted the Free The Robot Signature, a coconut coffee drink. I thought this was interesting. I must order this the next time.
We ordered a Surf & Turf Meatballs Sandwich for sharing as we were worried over the portion being too big for 2 small eaters. It turned out to be a rather tiny one which can be held in a palm. Ok, not that small either. In short, even the small eater could finish one sandwich, unless your appetite is really tiny. We like the meatball and the fillings and cheese combination. You may find that it is a little like burger. My sister find it a little salty while it is acceptable for me. Overall, we enjoyed.
As usual, I got myself a Cappuccino while my sister got herself her favourite Hot Chocolate. Cuppa was full body, low acidity but I find it a little bitter. While the Hot Chocolate was certainly thumb up.
NAHMJ Verdict
Based on the food item we tried, we thought well of Free The Robot.
A pity that they don’t open early enough for the working crowds around the area.
