Carol Mel Cafe is among the many eateries cum cafe along the stretch at the ground floor of The Commerze at 1 Irving Place. For more eatery at The Commerze, check it out here. It dishes out Ipon inspired home recipes dishes.
Scandinavian theme was used for in the design of the cafe, creating a warm and cosy feel. To made it more like home, they have pasted some Chinese paper cutting and the fusion resulted in a kind of ‘typical Singaporean home’. To make it even more homey, Carol Mel Cafe offers cafe-hoppers with free Wifi.
Since it is a cafe serving Ipoh home cooked dishes, a section of the menu is devoted to the homestyled dishes with options of rice or bee hoon and you find sandwiches and some new items such as typical brunch affairs and pasta. Not forgetting to mention the desserts which include Waffles and cakes.
Homestyle
I was at Carol Mel Cafe on a Sunday, they weren’t serving Ah Mooi Special Chicken with Rice per my first choice. I was recommended the Thai Mee Hoon with Chicken instead so I went for it.
When I was served, I went wow as I was delighted to see my fave, the Sunny Sideup. Importantly, the yolk was still runny. I like the texture of the soft and yet not mushy Mee Hoon. As lots of deep fried shallots was added, it enhanced the flavours of the Mee Hoon. A wedge of lime was by the side, after drizzling it over the Mee Hoon, the Mee Hoon was even more appertising. While the Chicken was tender as breast meat was used. There is certainly room for improvement to the sauce. The flavour was a little too mild.
As for the size of the portion, I find it a little too small for most, since a small eater like myself, I could finish the plate.
Beverages
Beverage served were the usual Coffee and Tea. There was a couple of Soda drinks with a few Chocolate and Milk options. Never failed, I went for Cappuccino.
When I saw my cup of Cappuccino, I was a little down as there wasn’t any latte art. The cup was full body with low acidity and nutty flavour hint. It was a decent cup.
Cakes
I spotted a number of cakes over the glass display counter and I couldn’t take my eyes of the Red Velvet with Cheesecake.
There were two layers of Red Velvet sandwiching a layer of Cheesecake and frosted with cream cheese. The Red Velvet was dense but was soft and moist. The cheesecake in the centre was a little coarse and lightly cheese flavoured. I was pretty neutral with this piece of cake. I won’t describe it as delish, neither would I describe it as lousy.
Final Verdict
I like the ambience of Carol Mel Cafe. It is a cafe with a cosy ambience and the best par, with free wifi. And on a Sunday, it was quiet, great for spending time alone or working in the cafe.
