There are about five catholic churches in Beijing. Most hold either Latin or Chinese mass. For English mass, only the South Church – Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin (宣武门南堂) in Xuanwu district. Below is the mass schedule

St Michael’s Church is located at the Legation Quarter. This is the church I attended as it is nearest to the hotel I lived in.

The South Church – Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin (宣武门南堂)

The church is also called ‘the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception due to the huge painting of the Immaculate Conception hanging on one of the wall. It is the seat of Beijing’s dioceses and Patriotic Catholic Association.

Getting There

By Subway: Subway Line 2 – Fuchengmen station (阜成门站)

The Northern Church is a Catholic Church located in Xishiku. It was originally called ‘Savior Church’. The church was erected in Qing Dynasty during Emperor Kangxi’s reign by the French missionary.

The Eastern Church – St. Joseph’s Church 王府井教堂

The Eastern Church is the most conspicuous cathedral in Beijing which is located at Wangfujing Street. It was originally named after St Joseph. The church has many Giuseppe Castiglione paintings. It has undergone few restoration. The church is now a cultural site.

The Western Church – Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel (西直门天主堂)

The Western Church is more commonly known by the local as Xizhimen Church. The church was built by the Italian Lazarist missionary during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng.
