I am a big fan of Peranakan food, however, I always find that this local cuisine is under-appreciated by many. It was heart-warming to know that Godmama, a new Peranakan Restaurant perched at level 4 of Funan is trying to bring this cuisine to the millennial by introducing Peranakan flavours in familiar Brunch items on weekends.
The restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating. I love particularly the outdoor feel. They have 2 strong fan to cool the area.
At Godmama, they offered mainly Peranakan cuisine however on the weekends during brunch hours, they created a special Peranakan Brunch menu. I love the idea and was excited to try them out.
From Godmama Brunch Menu
First is the All-star Egg Skin in Popiah ($6.50). The signature itemis available on all the menu at Godmama. The egg skin is extremely delicate with tasty turnip and other ingredients in the wrap.
Adapted from the BBQ pulled pork, at Godmama, the Pulled Pork Pongteh Sunny ($15.90) is offered. Using Pongteh Pork; cooked with the Peranakan traditional recipe with fermented bean sauce and soy sauce. A pity the flavour was weak.
Next was the Babi Assam Baked Eggs ($16.90), a marriage of familiar Peranakan flavour with common brunch item, baked egg. It was a shame that it was too spicy for me.
Among the savoury brunch item, Buah Keluak Bolognese Pasta ($19.90) is my favourite. I love buah keluak, but I prefer this unique flavour to be stronger and less of the tomato flavour.
Finally, washed it down with lightly chewy and yet fluffy Banana Pengat Buttermilk Pancakes ($17.90).
NAHMJ Verdict
Overall it was an encouraging to see how creative the chef at Godmama can get. However I suspect, it may satisfy only a small population. Personally, I was expecting a stronger Peranakan character in the brunch item. For those who dislike this cuisine, I believe, no matter how water down the flavour is, they may still can’t accept it.
