With the previous tenant at 337 Beach Road, Laffio Cafe gone, Good Old Days Bistro filled the space. The same scenario happened at 17 Jalan Pinang, with Artistry closed down, Earlybird Cafe occupied the void. The name kindle thoughts of literally the good old days.
This is yet another cafe dressed in vintage theme joining cafes such as Old Habits Cafe, Brunches Cafe and AEIOU Cafe, just to name a few. However, there are still some different to the those named above. There is a playfulness in the design.
Such as the whimsical mural art added on the whitewash wall which I love. Beside it is a table with swings as seats. I equally adore these.
At another corner, along a stretch of wall, there are shelves of items. All accessories in the cafe are for sales.
Food offered on the menu are western with a handful of All Day Breakfast items. We tried one of which, The Hearty Brekkie ($16.90). Dished in a black wobbly pan. Not all items on this plate is tasty. I love the scramble egg, sauteed mushrooms and green. Neutral to bacon and toast. Lastly, dislike the sausage and bland rosti.
Crabbie Feast ($16.90) was the other food, we ordered. Though I like crab, I never enjoy tomato-based pasta. Generous amount of chunky crab meat crowned the pasta. Pasta was al dente, however, the tomato-based sauce was lacking in a flavour. The dish taste like the home-made kind of food. I find the taste too flat. My friends feel that they could add chilli to spice it up.
We ordered a tasty and pretty drink, “Galaxy” Home-made Cold Brew Tea ($7.50), made with Butterfly Pea flower with flavourings. Overall, it taste pretty refreshing with minimal artificial flavouring scent.
NAHMJ Verdict
Personally, I find the food served at Good Old Days Bistro mediocre. It does taste like the food whipped at home. Overall, there is still room for improvement.
