Jumbo Seafood Restaurant in Singapore is a big brand name. No doubt, I have visited numerous time. Strangely, every time was there to entertain visitors from overseas. In particular to introduce them to the famous Chilli Crab in Singapore. It is interesting that I never bring overseas visitors to Mellben or Paradise. They have expanded to China with quite some outlet there and again, I visited the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant Shanghai at iAPM mall with non-Singaporeans too. In this same mall, the other restaurant I tried was Bellagio Cafe.
I never wrote any post about them, till .. this round, when I visited the Shanghai outlet.
Interior design is different from the Singapore outlet. At Shanghai, it looks classy with an Atas (high class in Malay) vibes, unlike the outlets in Singapore that feel more casual.
Over to the menu, whether is there a major difference between Singapore and China items, I am clueless about it. At the very least, the famous Chilli Crab and other flavours are available.
Begin with an appetiser, a prawn dish. I don’t remember the name. Various layers of dice ingredients such as tomato, cucumber and mango, finally, crowned with diced prawn on a bed of sauce. It was an item that whet the appetite.
Next is the Hot plate Beancurd. Deep-fried homemade beancurd with generous amount of oyster sauce on a thin layer of omelette. This dish is best with jasmine rice.
Next up was the Steamed Cod Fish. An oily fish with a tasty savoury sauce.
We tried the Sambal Fried Rice for the first time. Lightly spicy with quite some egg, a pity not much of wok hei.
Time for crab! We ordered 2 crabs in 2 flavours. First is the Creamy Butter Crab. It was a shame that the sauce was too diluted. Glad that the crab was fresh and meaty.
Salted Egg Crab was my prefered choice. The salted egg sauce coated tightly on the crab surface. I like it since it was savoury and not sweet.
Rounding up with the sweetish fruity Mango Sago.
NAHMJ Verdict
Though I have never order most of the dishes we had at Jumbo Seafood Restaurant Shanghai in Singapore, except the crab. I thought it tasted pretty authentic. I didn’t notice much adaptation for Shanghainese preference.
