When we think of Dim Sum along Jalan Besar, we think of Swee Choon Tim Sum. The good news is that in addition to this famous iconic restaurant, we now welcome Dim Sum Haus which is certainly equally good if not better. Getting to Dim Sum Haus is extremely convenient as the exits of Jalan Besar MRT station of the Downtown line are adjacent and opposite of the restaurant.
However, don’t be confused with another Dim Sum restaurant, Dim Sum Place located North Bridge Road.
Since it is new, one thing for sure is, the ambience is so much more comfortable.
Menu at a glance consists of Steamed, Baked, Pan-fried and deep
I am sure most will never miss out o Har Gao and Siew Mai. At Dim Sum Haus, we ordered the Steamed Shrimp Dumpling ($4.20) and instead of the usual Siew Mai, we tried the Steamed Charcoal Chicken and Shrimp Dumpling ($4) instead. This one used Chicken meat and has a chewy dumpling skin. Personally, I am not a a fan of Chicken Dim Sum.
Should you find the both Har Gao and Siew Mai boring, opt for the Japanese Dumpling ($4.60) or the Xiao Long Bao ($3.60). The former is on the sweeter spectrum and not spicy while the latter has a skin wrap that is soft but lack of chewiness.
Steamed Malay Sponge Cake ($3.20) was lightly sweet and fluffy. We love Dim Sum Haus rendition.
Personally, I love Dim Sum Haus’s Baked Salted Egg Custard Bun ($4.80). The Salted Egg Custard in the bun was of generous amount. Though some still find it too sweet.
Pan-fried Mushroom Bun is a must order for an item rarely found on Dim Sum Menu.
As the Mushroom Bun was pan-fried, it has a crispy base. The bun is thin with lots of tasty mushroom.
For diners who love deep-fried food, go for the crispy Fried Fresh Beancurd Skin ($3.80). Within the beancurd skin were lots of fresh prawn.
The highlight at Dim Sum Haus is the Crispy Mee Sua Kueh with Chinese Sausage ($3.20). We highly recommend this item to order. Definitely must order.
If you need more carbohydrates that are filling, Steamed Rice Roll with Shrimp ($4.20) and tasty Hong Kong Boat Congee ($6.80) with lots of ingredients, are great option. We love the idea of having a crispy prawn wrapped within the rice roll which was even better than having the dough fritter. Perfect if the rice roll could be a little chewy while Congee could be smoother.
Finally, end of the meal with desserts. A safe choice is Sweetened Mango Sago With Pomelo ($4). We will surely choose the Watercress Honey Ice Jelly ($4.20). Watercress flavour was prominent, and it is this flavour that we love.
NAHMJ Verdict
The next time when you are planning to go Swee Choon Tim Sum, pop over to Dim Sum Haus instead.
