Maison de L’hui at Julu Road, Winner of Restaurant Week Spring 2016, Best Restaurant A – Shanghai, China

I visited Maison de L’hui at Julu Road. They have a second restaurant at Rock Bund and the third at Sinan Road. Both was awarded Best Restaurant A. 

 

The restaurant at Julu Road is nestled in a beautiful villa. It was stunningly beautiful. Built by Xi Xipan in 1923. When entered, the interior has a Chinese theme design. It looks grand.

I was at Maison de L’hui at Julu Road for dinner during for the winner edition menu at RMB 278. Appetizers 慧公馆三小碟 served were Marinated Foie Gras 鹅肝慕斯, Signature Smoked Fish Fillets 本帮特色熏鱼, Organic Vegetable Salad with Special Dressing 有机田园蔬菜沙拉. Each and every item on the platter was outstanding.

Soup was next, Double-boiled Blessed Thistle Soup 养胃仙草清炖功夫汤. The soup has a hint of floral aroma with a good balance of meat flavour in the soup. Amount of seasoning was just right to bring out the complete flavour.

For the Main Courses, first was the Baked little Rock Lobster in superior broth 白兰地酒胡椒焗乳龙虾. The broth elevated the flavour of the lobster resulting in a very tasty meat.

Next was the Low Smoked Australian Beef 低温烟熏澳洲和牛肉. The smokiness was strong enough for the nose. Unfortunately, the sense was similar to the cigarette smoke. The muscle of the meat seems like it was broken down. End result of the texture was a little like minced meat.

 

Braise Deep sea Bass and dried bean curd cut into shreds 生折深海鲈鱼肉大煮干丝 was next. This soup is stronger in flavour. Even the bland bean curd shreds was tasty when consumed with the soup. I thought the vegetable chosen for the soup was perfect too.

Wok-fried Truffle and Organic Vegetables with Red and Yellow Pepper 缤纷五彩素伴园椒盒 though I couldn’t find or taste truffle, it was a delish item too. The combination of the medley of vegetables was ingenious with white and black fungus, sweet pea, mushroom, gingko nuts and lily bulb. The entire dish was perfect.

Potherb mustard Yellow Croaker Fish Wonton with Soup 手工雪菜黄鱼馄饨 is an interesting dish to me since the wonton is wrapped with fish instead of the usual minced pork. The wonton wrap was a little thick and hard than what I  am used to. Personally, I find it a little fishy. While the soup was too similar to the one in the beancurd shreds.

Lastly was Caviars & Fruits Salads in Onion Cone 咸筒鱼籽酱. Light and refreshing. 

 

 

NAHMJ Verdict

 

Except for the Wonton, personally I felt the dishes whipped by Masion de L’hui at Julu Road were impressive.
