As I browsing through the list of China Restaurant Week Spring 2017 Winners Edition, I was focusing on Chinese restaurant and found a restaurant awarded for the Best Chinese Restaurant. And that was Maggie’s Restaurant. Without hestitation, I went ahead to make the reservation as I thought it is a must to try them out. 

 

From the Facade, mainly due to the stones on the wall, it reminded me of castle. In any case, I wouldn’t associate it with Chinese Restaurant. Interior, I would like to describe as European theme. It has this old Shanghai feel, probably due to the history.

I was at Maggie’s Restaurant for lunch. The set menu for this special edition was at RMB 138 per person.

After settled down, a plate of fruits as starter was served. I was a bit taken a back. I find it strange and insincere. Maybe it is just me.

 

Next came the Fried Spare Ribs with Soy Sauce. The single rib looked skimpy to me. It was tasty as the meat was well-marinated. The fried chopped-garlic elevated the flavour. A pity was that every element was soaked with oil.

Followed by the Braised Marinated Tofu in Chicken Soup. Soup was tasty, tofu was bland and it tasted raw. Overall was disappointing.

 

Nothing worth mentioning about the Sauteed Seasonal Vegetable

Last savoury dish was the Braised Radish with Gravy with Rice. The radish absorbed all the essence of the gravy. I love it. The gravy was flavourful but a little too sweet for my liking. I was informed that I must eat the gravy with the rice.

 

 

Rounding up the meal with Mango Pudding. I could savour the mango flavour but I thought there are some artificial flavouring and colouring added. Though the pudding was smooth, it was a little too hard.

 

 

NAHMJ Verdict

 

I didn’t understand why Maggie’s Restaurant was awarded the Best Chinese Restaurant at the China Restaurant Week Spring 2017 Edition. Most dishes were mediocre. Maybe, it is just me, I couldn’t appreciate it.
