Stray By Fatcat per the name, some might have guessed that this cafe is by the same folks of Fatcat. They originated from the East and now they decided to invade the Orchard which I think it is great for choice of location. It is perched at Level 4 of Orchard Central.
The cafe branded themselves as serving progressive Chinese cuisine which seems to be on the raising trend. Decor of the cafe feels as if it was on the dark side. Most key feature is of a dark tone or even black though it was contrasted with some white marble and light colour table top.
Coming to the menu, I spotted rice bowls and waffle. Lunch special is offered with a complimentary coffee or tea with every Main ordered.
Rice bowls available were Salmon Yu-Sheng Bowl ($18) which sounded special and timely for the Lunar New Year period, while Black Pepper Wagyu Bowl ($20) was great choice too. And a Salted Egg Chicken Waffles ($19).
I went ahead with the former, Salmon Yu-Sheng Bowl. There was a hidden runny egg buried between the pearl rice and salmon. Personally, I find the amount of salmon too scanty for the amount of rice. And I would very prefer to have it with sauce. As it was, too bland.
Cappuccino was decent. A cuppa of medium to low acidity, full body and loaded with berry flavour notes with some nuttiness.
Commando’s Favourite ($17) was the most disappointing among them all. It was a sugar loaded freeze that was lychee-flavoured. Supposedly gorgeously decorated with tiny bits of tea jelly, longan and pretty pink flower meringue. At $17, it was extremely over-priced.
NAHMJ Verdict
Stray by Fatcat was a far-cry from their first venture, Fatcat. Certainly, there is lots of room for improvement, even for their dessert which is Fatcat’s strength. In addition, there is nothing very much of Chinese cuisine.
