Black Tongue Bistro & Bar along Beach Road is so unnoticeable. I have passed by the stretch a number of times but never once I noticed until recently. Googled through the web but didn’t find much review about them as such I thought I should pay them a visit to find out for myself.
When I see the name black tongue, it reminds me of Chow Chow (a dog breed). Space is well designed with tables only on both side. But as there are random tables and chairs outside the outlet, somehow, it spoiled the look.
Though there are cushy row seats by the side but aren’t exactly comfortable as the seats is lower than it should for the table.
Begin the dinner with Wild Mushroom Soup ($5.90) and Thai Style Top Shell ($11.90). Wild Mushroom Soup has sufficient mushroom flavour and is slanted to the savoury which is good. It doesn’t has the sweet hint which is usually from too much cream. And with drops of truffle oil, it added more fragrance to complement the soup.
Thai Style Top Shell was pretty spicy. But the sweet and sour punch was present too. Overall, enjoyable is you also enjoy chewy food.
Salted Egg Sauce is still going on strong. We ordered Buttered Salted Egg Fish & Chips ($17.90) isn’t due to this reason but we were kind of surprise that Black Tongue Bistro & Bar uses Baramudi for the dish. For the best enjoyment, the fish has to be consumed together with the batter and salted egg sauce resulting in a perfect harmonization.
At Black Tongue Bistro & Bar, a page worth of burgers menu on either Charcoal bun or Matcha bun was available. We decided on the Black Tongue Burger ($14.90). We didn’t enjoy the black sauce as it is simple one dimensional which is briny without any additional flavour.
Ended dinner with Vanilla Crepe with Caramelized Banana ($10.90). Lightly sweet overall profile and crepe was slight chewy. Replace with either a Earl Grey or Salted Caramel ice cream would be our recommendation. Having a Vanilla ice cream resulting in a boring dish.
Since Black Tongue is a Bar, they offer lots of alcoholic selection. Nonetheless, we spotted an interesting drink, Iced Orange Lavender ($6). The best part, no syrup added.
NAHMJ Verdict
Overall dinner was pleasant though we think they could improve their recipe increase the dinning experience. Oh ya the cushy side seats is another improvement area for consideration.
