The name of the restaurant is very interesting, What’s This. They are a Korean Restaurant at Killiney Road taking over the space coincidentally occupied previously by a Korean Restaurant. Celebrity Master Chef Alex Kim headed What’s This kitchen.
First noticeable characteristic was orange as there was warm lighting and orange wall. This certainly doesn’t help for my food photography. Next was the fun interior space with one side of the wall reminds us of the container surface with piggies graffiti. While photo of stars who visited the restaurant decorated the opp wall. In addition, the restaurant added some coil of colour threads on this same wall to brighten the feel.
We kickstart the meal with some so called Tea per the menu, though it seems non present. Presentation scored high on aesthetic. Equally important is the taste and we are more than agreeable. We also like it for it is lightly sweeten. In case, you are piqued about our choice, from left are Yuzu Tea ($5.50), Schizandra Tea ($5.50), Lemongrass Tea ($5.50) and Green Plum Tea ($5.50).
Once order placed, very quickly the service crew served the typical Korean side dishes. At What’s This, there were only 3 side dishes. As always, Kimichi and the beansprout were available.
Budae Jjigae for 2 Pax ($38) was highly recommended by the service crew for their Hot Pot. The hot hold quite some spam, bacon, sausages, minced meat, leek, zucchini, cabbage, rice cake and noodle. For those with low spicy tolerance beware. On the whole, we enjoyed the flavourful hot pot.
The service crew endorsed of the Beef Bulgogi Kimbob and Volcano Pork Kimbob ($13.50). We went ahead with the latter. Oat with some seasoning laid the plate. When oats coated the kimbob slices, somehow improve the experience which otherwise was plain.
Korean Barbeque is a must when in Korean restaurant as such we aren’t going to miss this. At What’s This, they required diners to order at least 2 portion of meat. We went with the Soy Sauce Marinated Pork ($22) and Caveman Beef Rib ($29). 3 out of the 4 diners prefer the latter while I enjoyed the former more due to the marinate. In addition to the shredded spring onions, lettuce and garlic were provided for meat wrap.
Finally, is the Oh My Gosh Ginger Honey Chicken available at 4 pieces ($15) or 8 pieces ($28). Crispy skin with succulent meat and lightly ginger honey coated the surface; the result was mouthwatering.
In addition, Ramen and burger are offered too. A pity the Lunch Box is only available during lunch. At the moment, dessert isn’t on the menu, we couldn’t end our meal with a sweet note. We hope the dessert is offered in time to come.
NAHMJ Verdict
NAHMJ and guests rated highly the food and the drink. All in all, food at the restaurant was impressive. But we find the music blasting at a level difficult for diners to make small talk.
